'Museums are Binoculars to History’ and ‘History is the Compass to the Future’ | International Museum Day

On 18th of May which marks the International Museum Day when I was going through my albums it struck me how much my visits to museums impacted me. Quite a few find museums boring, a necessary trip from school. Others see museums as ‘Binoculars to History’ and believe that ‘History is the Compass to the Future’. Museums just don't preserve our heritage, they preserve the knowledge, the understanding, the social structures that succeeded and failed and allow us to interpret our current circumstances so that we can take better decisions and carve a better future. There have been societies and cultures that have reached great zeniths but have collapsed because the knowledge was not preserved and was lost when the few who had it passed away. When we enter a museum, if we stop looking at exhibits as just objects and start visualising the life that happened around it, you will feel like you have entered a time machine. An Artist’s Story

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived an artist. He was known far and wide for his beautiful paintings. Many people came to him to paint their portraits and also placed orders for paintings on certain topics. He had many fans but also many enemies. One day as he was enjoying the view in his balcony, he got a letter. This letter was an order from a “A Fan”. The fan wanted a still life painting of a bottle of painkiller and the backdrop was to be of his balcony. ”Odd” he thought ”but many people place crazy orders”. Well then, I best go and get a bottle of painkiller from the medical room”. As he made his way down he doesn't notice a crook, an evil person or whatever you want to think of him as, lurking in the shadows. 112th Women’s day has come and gone. The passing of each women’s day witnessed more strides and victories for women. Women franchise is now an accepted norm. Women entering all fields of work has become easier. Women’s right to property is a legal right in most parts of the world. However women’s decision making power is still not universal. Challenges at work including glass ceiling persist. Women’s day is an apt occasion to remember and salute the movements that achieved results and also to analyse and list out problem areas that women should focus their fight on. However with each year the overwhelming atmosphere is dominated by companies which are just using women’s day to promote their products.
